At St Nicolas, we celebrate different Christian festivals throughout the year as well and enjoying learning more about other religions that are followed by members of our community. We use RE as a powerful way of supporting children in their understanding of the world around them, giving them knowledge and understanding of people from other cultures and communities. Throughout the RE curriculum, we want pupils to develop a natural curiosity for the world around them and to grow in their own spiritual, moral, social cultural development. 

From EYFS to Year 6, children will build a picture of both Christian worldviews and other worldviews by making connections to their own experiences as well as with previous learning they have undertaken at school. Using guidance from the ODBE school of work, children will journey through a range of concepts driven by three core strands:

- Beliefs and questions (theology): This focuses on core beliefs of different religions and how texts, symbols and teachings can be interpreted.

- Community and identity (sociology): This focuses on the practical way in which people express their beliefs.

- Reality and truth (philosophy): This focuses on how people decide what is true and reliable and will give pupils opportunities to explore the wider concept of what a worldview is and how people reach these ideas. 

What you will see:

• Children learning about Christianity and other worldviews in an age-appropriate manner.
• Children posing questions to further develop their understanding of different traditions and world views.
• Children using their reasoning skills to understand that there are different ways of interpreting texts and having an understanding that different people reach different conclusions.
• Curious children who want to know more about how and why people think and act in certain ways.

What you will hear:

• Children discussing different worldviews and sharing their own where they feel confident to do so.
• Children making connections between what they are learning now, their previous knowledge of religion and how different worldviews compare.

Our R.E. lessons are designed to be informative and have the aim of helping children to learn more about the world around them. Parents/carers can choose to withdraw their children from R.E. lessons. We would encourage you to talk to your child's teacher about the curriculum covered during lessons if you have any questions or queries.
