St Nicolas

Church of England Primary School, Abingdon

Year 5 (Class 12)

Welcome to Class 12

The Upper Years Inter-house football competition took place on Wednesday 13th February - well done to all those that took part and all the staff that supported. Everyone had fun and there was amazing team spirit on display.

St Nicolas Day Assembly

The children will perform for parents on the 18th December at 2pm. Here is the list of costumes they will need. Thank you for your support and we hope you enjoy our assembly!

Mrs Elliott and I would like to welcome you to our Class 12 webpage. On here, you will find updates of the work we have been completing in class and ideas of things you might want to do at home to further support your child. If you ever have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to pop in to chat to us in class, or alternatively you can email the office so we can organise a good time to meet together properly.

During this half term, we have been focusing on our solar system, the planets, how we have day and night, and the movement of the Moon and Earth in relation to the Sun. We have used a large light source as the Sun and a globe to try to recreate day and night in Class 12, with varied success! The children have also produced small models to show the Moon's orbit around Earth and the Earth's orbit around the Sun. Small groups completed demonstrations for the class using PE equipment: large yellow hoop for the Sun; white hockey ball for the Moon; and basketball for the Earth. Can you remember how long each orbit or rotation takes?

We're very much looking forward to seeing all your wonderful Space themed homework projects and to welcoming parents into school for our Express Event (17/10/18 at 2:40pm in classrooms).

Homework projects due in Wednesday 17th October 2018.

In English, we have been reading a book called Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce, which focuses on our main character Liam. The book is funny in many places as Liam seems to always end up into some sort of trouble or facing some sort of dilemma. We look forward to finally finding out how he actually ended up lost in Space, once the children have produced some excellent diary recounts as Liam! If your child is enjoying reading Cosmic, a number of the children in class would also recommend some of Frank Cottrell Boyce's other books which are shown below.
